Instructions for Making a Greeting Card and Envelope

Card scoring and folding

Score either long way or short way - depending on how you want your card to open. Score on what will be the inside of the card

If you want the card to open on the long edge - score first across the width of the sheet by positioning the cardstock against the Boxmaker rail and scoring at 5-1/2" - be sure to use side marked, "bottom". The dimensions on that side match the markings

If you want the card to open on the short edge - score first along the length of the sheet by using the 1/4" spacer supplied with the Boxmaker and scoring at the 4-1/2" mark. (the use of the spacer shifts the score to 4-1/4")

Fold the card in half along the first score - it is helpful if you use the guide rail on the Boxmaker to line up the edges when you make this fold.

Smooth this fold down - using the scoring tool as a folding bone.

Score the folded sheet, through both thicknesses, on what will be the inside of the card; at either 4-1/4" or 5-1/2" - depending on which way you made the first score.

Fold the card and you are done.

You can decorate the card before or after it is folded - but obviously, if you are going to do computer printing or copying on the card - do that before folding.

When adding Images & Text to the card panels, (1) is the Inside Right, (2) is the Back side, (3) is the Front and (4) is the Inside Left. The Text or Image for (2) and (3) should be right-side-up and the Text/Image for (1) and (4) should be upside-down. Most graphics programs (Pagemaker, Photoshop, etc.) have a setting to "Rotate" images, simply rotate 180 degrees to create an upside-down panel.

The way you have numbered panels is for a card that opens on the longer folded side - if you want to make one that opens on the shorter side - the layout is different - all images and copy are rotated 90 degrees and placed differently. We'll let you figure that out for yourselves.

To download an image, simply find the image you want to use then save to a file on your computer... Then, when using the image with your software, choose "insert" and find the image you want.

Instructions for Making an Envelope for a 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" Card

Use 8-1/2" x 11" sheet
Use 67# cardstock (about .008" thick)
Make the card out of the same cardstock
Use the same color for both - or use contrasting colors
Be sure to use the Boxmaker side marked, "BOTTOM"
Score at 1-1/4" from each long edge of the sheet - use the 1/4" spacer and score in the 1-1/2" slot (that puts the score at 1-1/4").(lines C on drawing)
Score at 4-1/2" from one of the short edges (line D on drawing)
Score at 1-1/2" from the other short edge (line E on drawing)
Fold the envelope by folding in the 1-1/4" edges first
Then fold up the 4-1/2" panel
Then fold down the 1-1/2" panel
Smooth all the scores down now by using the Boxmaker scoring tool as a scoring bone
Open the envelope and insert the card
Refold and secure the 1-1/2" panel - either the edge of the 4-1/2" panel can slip inside the 1-1/2" panel or the 1-1/2" panel can overlap the edge of the 4-1/2" panel.
Secure with any glue tape, label or sticker - or sealing wax.

Soil Preparation

Soils are grouped under three headings: Sand, Loam and Clay. All require the same basic cultivation but at different times of the year.

Sandy soils are made of coarse particles. They should be dug over and dressed with organic matter in January and February, this ensures valuable nutrients are not washed away by rain.

Clay soils have particles so small that water does not pass through easily. Dig over in the Fall so that the frost can break it down. Compost and manure added in spring will help improve their workability.

Loam soils can vary in structure. Usually they are easier to work. Dig over in winter adding compost or manure to improve its condition.

Always test your soils pH with a chemical test kit. Don't forget 7 is neutral, below 7 is acid and above 7 is alkali.
Adding lime to your soil corrects acidity and improves workability releasing minerals in acid soils.
Soils with too much alkalinity need dressing with farm manure or peat.

The Camera Shutter

The camera shutter lets light in to the camera and on to the film or sensor. Film cameras use a mechanical shutter either in the lens or just in front of the film (called a focal plane shutter.) In modern camera designs the mechanical shutter may be driven by electromagnets rather than the springs used in older designs, and will normally be electronically controlled to give more precise timing.

Digital Electronics

Digital cameras may use a mechanical shutter - most dSLRs do. Simpler cameras may use the camera electronics rather than an actual shutter. Basically the sensor has to be cleared, then allowed to build up a signal for the time required, and the signal then read again.

Speed Sequence

When shutter speeds are set manually, they usually use the following sequence of speeds (in seconds): 1, ½, ¼, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, 1/2000 etc
Each speed in this series is (roughly or exactly) half that to the left, giving a halving in the amount of light reaching the film. Although the term 'stop' originally came from the camera apertures, photographers talk about this series representing 'one stop' differences.
Automatic speed setting may use the same discrete speeds, but is often is able to vary the speeds steplessly.

In lens shutters

Shutters in or just behind the lens are used in both expensive professional medium and large format equipment - where every lens has its own shutter - and also in consumer compact cameras. These shutters have a number of blades (the simplest only one) that open to let light in, then spring back into position to end the exposure. In some very simple cameras the same blades that create the aperture also make the exposure. These in lens shutters generally have a fastest speed of 1/250 or 1/500 of a second, but can be synchronized with flash at all speeds.

Focal plane shutters

These have two blinds that run either horizontally or vertically across just in front of the film or sensor. Before the exposure, the first blind covers the film. To start the exposure, this runs across uncovering the film to light. The second blind then moves across to cover the film again.
At slow shutter speeds, the first blind has finished moving before the second starts, so the film is completely uncovered for a short time, allowing flash to be synchronized. At faster shutter speeds the second blind starts when only a part of the film has been uncovered and the two blinds travel across exposing a slit of film between them. Flash at these speeds would only expose the film behind the gap between the blinds.

This exposure through a relatively narrow moving slit allows focal plane shutters to have very fast shutter speeds - up to 1/8000 s on some cameras, but flash sync is usually limited to a relatively slow speed, perhaps 1/125s. With some more modern camera and flash designs, higher flash synch speeds are possible.

Choice of Shutter Speeds

Choosing correct shutter speed is important in making sure you avoid camera shake or blurring of moving objects. You can usually avoid shake by using a shutter speed faster than that based on putting the '35mm equivalent focal length' of the lens you are using into the formula: 1/focal length. A man who had such incredible intellectual powers and abilities, that he had a difficult time taking any project to its full completion. Consider it, here's a fellow who one minute is inventing the world's first armored fight vehicle and the next, imagining flying machines not unlike today's helicopters. He illustrated the ideas he had about underwater machines, images of what would later echo submarines. With so many ideas floating through his brain, its understandable that many of Da Vinci's drawings and notes were left unfinished as he moved from one revelation to the next.

As a painter, Da Vinci was astounding, having trained under the watchful eye of Verrocchio, a Florentine painter, goldsmith and sculptor, who in addition to creating fabulously elegant works of art, also shared my first name. Da Vinci learned his craft and went on to use it not only for pleasure, but for payment. His reputation as a master earned him many commissions, some of which he completed and was even paid for. He was the original creative thinker, a philosopher as much as an artist who after contemplating a move in his work, would stop, look and contemplate some more.

In an interesting turn of events, during the year of 1482, Da Vinci offered his services to Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan, not as an artist, but rather a skilled military engineer who could, as an added bonus, paint and create sculpture in marble, bronze and clay. Specifically, Da Vinci was intent on letting the Duke know that he would undertake the commission of a bronze horse, to be designed and executed in the memory of the Duke's father, Francesco. The Duke thought this was marvelous and Da Vinci had a job. Which brings us to our story ...

The horse, or rather, the equestrian monument, that Da Vinci so wanted to create for the Duke, never made it further than a large clay maquette, or model of a horse, minus his rider. Da Vinci was said to have felt at the time, "...of the horse, I shall say nothing, because I know the times ...." The sculpture was never cast in bronze as intended and eventually died a slow death as a result of war in the late 1400's. There were however countless drawings connected with this monument which was to be the largest equine statue ever built, weighing 80 tons and standing 24 feet high.

In yet another interesting turn of events, some 500 years later, an American art patron, airline pilot and amateur sculptor named Charles Dent decided to undertake a project to try to make Leonardo's horse a reality...

The final statue was crafted by the Tallix foundry in Beacon, NY (the same foundry who did the FDR and Korean War Memorials in Washington DC). The giant horse was unveiled in its new and permanent home in Milan.

To newcomers, the term "Jet Boat" potentially could suggest a craft propelled along by the a high-powered and complex engine that speeds modern aircraft around the world. Essentially, Jet Boat" is a normal boat fitted with an engine to drive a water pump or "Jet Unit". This draws water in through an intake in the bottom of the hull and forces it out at high pressure (like a Jet) through a outlet hole at the rear. Unlike a conventional power boat, the jet boat has no propeller or rudder. Instead, it is propelled along, and steered, simply by the thrust of the jet stream escaping for the outlet at the rear. Turn on a garden hose with its nozzle-end freewill demonstrate this convincingly and the feel, of its "jet" of water.

This reactionary principle was stated in Sir Isaac Newton Third Law of Motion:-
" Every action has an equal and opposite reaction &Jet boats are a perfect illustration of the principle.

In the last 30 short years New Zealand has become the home of the Jet boat These craft have conquered the world's most difficult and dangerous rivers.

But who invented it?

Controversy has raged for years over this question. A New Zealand sheep farmer, Bill Hamilton, has been said to be its inventor, but he himself never made such a claim.

"I do not claim to have invented marine jet propulsion." was his response to a critic in 1962. The honour probably belongs to a gentleman named Archimedes.

Indeed. 250 years before the birth of Christ. the Greek physicist dreamed of a water-jet craft and got close to the concept when he invented the screw for raising water. A long, hand turned device rotated within a tube. The concept surfaced again in England in 1661 in experiments by two inventors, Toogocd and Hayes. But it was only with the development of Watt's steam engine in 1765 that tangible advances became possible.

Two other British inventors, Rurrisey and Mien, designed a steam-driven pump which drew in water at the bow of a vessel and ejected it at the stern, and between 1830 and 1860 there were at least 35 applications for patents in England alone.

The most advanced type of pump was designed by Henry Bessemer of London in 1849. This was a propeller axial-flow pump with a single suction pipe running forward with twin discharges aft. Bessemer even included vanes fore and aft of the impeller to straighten the flow and compensate for losses caused by the rotation of the water. Another design by Aleixandre Hediard in 1852 harnessed the jet thrust for steering and reversing. His pump sucked water through the bottom of the ship and discharged it through an elbow. the rotation of which controlled the vessel's direction.

By the end of the nineteenth century jets had been tested in many types of craft. The idea was taken up by Queen Victoria's Admiralty just as the paddle wheel was giving way to the screw propeller in The late 186Os. The Admiralty went so far as to compare the two novel modes of propulsion. It built identical gunboats and fitted one with hydraulic jets, the other with screw propulsion The "Jet Boat" employed a 4.2 metre centrifugal pump and discharged The water through the two nozzles astern, At 760 h.p. it was capable of 17 km/h but was slightly surpassed by the screw boat which achieved 18 km/h at 696 h.p.

About the same time, several European countries were showing an increasing interest in the principle of marine jet propulsion. In 1878 just 12 years after the British experiments, the Swedish Government carried out similar tests on torpedo boats. The screw-propelled vessel recorded 18.5 km/h at 90 h.p., the jet 15 km/h at 78 h.p. A year later the Germans conducted their own experiments with a jet powered craft named the Hydro motor. Like all others before them the Germans quickly lost faith in the potential of hydraulic propulsion. In all comparative tests based on the centrifugal pump and the screw propeller, the former fared badly. Even then, however a few men did realise that jet propulsion deserved a role in specific marine applications. In 1888 Britain's National Lifeboat Institution commissioned The world's first jet lifeboat. This steam driven boat was equipped with an auxiliary' jet system designed to prevent the craft's propeller from being fouled by sand or wreckage.

In 1900 a classic book on navel architecture by Sidney Barnaby, dismissed the viability of this means of propulsion with the following explanation

There are four characteristics of the centrifugal pump which prevent it from competing successfully with propellors and paddles. These are: 1. The difficulty of getting the water through the bottom of the vessel and into the pump without checking the velocity which it already has relative to the vessel. 2. The necessity of carrying in the vessel all the water acted upon. 3. The loss caused by friction of the water in the pipes. 4. The loss due to bends in the passages.

Half-century later, Charles William Feilden ("Bill") Hamilton, had the genius, passion and force of character necessary to succeed. Born in 1899 , Bill Hamilton, spent his first 21 years on an isolated sheep farm in South Canterbury, New Zealand.

Bill Hamilton, studied books and discovered that the greater the flow the more effective the unit. But the possibilities were limited by the design of the pump, which restricted the amount of flow.

The first production unit was installed in a 4.8 metre hull that was powered by a six cylinder 65 horse power Mark I Zephyr and reached speeds up to 45 km/h. This first boat is still in existence. Only seven of these so called Quinnat models, notable for their very noisy gear box, were built for customers in 1955.

The next unit to be designed was the Rainbow unit, which operated without gears. The performance was still poor and the flow and the horse power remained low.

In 1956 saw the beginning of the Hamilton, unit as it is known today. This break Through came in 1956, when Bill arrived at the work shop one morning and happened to glance at a scrap of paper with a small sketch.

And so the first commercially viable jet unit, the Chinook two stage axial, was rapidly hammered out in the workshop.

A year later it had developed into a three stage unit capable of speeds up to 80 km/h. And it was about to attract world wide attention.

A rock shoe's performance depends on the materials it's made out of and the way it's put together. Keep the following factors in mind as you start to compare different shoes:

Shoe height/cut - Ankle-high rock shoes provide extra support for your ankles and foot muscles. They also help protect your ankles from scrapes and scratches. Low-cut shoes provide less ankle support, but allow for more freedom of movement for high-angle smearing and other advanced climbing techniques.

Basic design - Slippers and shoes with hook-and-loop closures are easy to get on and off, which makes them perfect for bouldering and gym climbing (when you're in and out of your shoes frequently). Lace-up rock shoes provide a more snug and adjustable fit, and can be cinched up tight even after your shoes stretch (most rock shoes stretch slightly over time as a result of normal use).

Support/midsole stiffness - Stiff, supportive rock shoe soles protect your feet, make things easier on your foot muscles, and make it easier for you to stand on thin edges and holds. Stiff midsoles also limit shoe flex when you jam your feet into cracks and pockets, making things easier on your feet as you climb. Flexible midsoles allow you to "feel" the rock better so you can take advantage of small foot holds. Last shape

A "last" is the general foot shape around which a rock shoe is built. Manufacturers create and use a number of lasts when building different shoes. But most fall into one of 2 basic categories:

Semi-flexed - Semi-flexed lasts (also known as traditional lasts) are based on the traditional, anatomical shape of the human foot. They tend to be far more comfortable than cambered lasts (below), which makes them popular with most climbers, especially beginners and intermediates.
Cambered - Cambered lasts are bent slightly downward toward the toes. This downward curve forces your toes to crimp down slightly for better edging and control. Cambered rock shoes are most appropriate for difficult routes and competitions when you need the very best performance and control. They can be pretty rough on your feet, though, which makes them a poor choice for general climbing and/or beginners.

Construction:

Slip-lasted - Slip-lasted rock shoes have thin midsoles and insoles, so they're flexible and sensitive. They help you "feel" the rock underfoot so you know where you're putting your feet. These thin soles also allow you to get onto and grip very small holds.
Board-lasted - Board-lasted boots are stiffer and more durable than slip-lasted models, stretching less and lasting longer. Board-lasted shoes can also be resoled more often than slip-lasted shoes. Their stiff midsoles provide added support and protection for excellent performance on small edges and long crack climbs.

Snow Sports: How to Choose Gear for General Touring

If you're looking to ski mainly on trails, groomed tracks and/or moderate terrain, then general touring ski gear is for you. This equipment is designed primarily for the classic, forward kick-and-glide technique. It's a bit heavier than skate gear, but not as heavy (nor as supportive) as backcountry equipment.

Skis

Length
The longer a ski is, the more efficiently it will glide forward, but the harder it will be to turn and maneuver. For general touring, efficient forward glide is more important than maneuverability, so you need long skis. To get an estimate of the length you need, hold your arm overhead and measure from the ground to your wrist. If you occasionally want to explore beyond groomed cross-country ski areas and hard-packed trails (but still on easy to moderate terrain), look for slightly shorter skis. Going down 5cm or so will give you more control and maneuverability in variable snow conditions.

Width
Skis are measured across the "waist," or narrowest point. Skis for general touring are relatively narrow, making them perfect for striding in groomed tracks and on hard-packed trails. Narrow skis produce less drag than wide ones, so they help you glide faster, cover more ground and use less energy.

Wide striding skis have more surface area, which translates to greater flotation in soft snow. This extra flotation is useful for touring outside of established ski trails, especially if you're carrying a pack. Wider skis also provide a more stable platform, which makes them easier to balance on when striding in variable snow conditions.

Sidecut
Sidecut refers to the long, inward curves on both sides of a ski. It's designated by 3 numbers: the widths, in millimeters, of the ski's tip, waist and tail. A greater difference in these numbers will mean a larger sidecut. Sidecut helps you keep more of a ski's edge in contact with the snow when you turn it, so carving turns is easier. General touring skis have relatively little sidecut, since the need for carving turns is unlikely in groomed tracks or on gentle, hard-packed trails. If you want to go off trail occasionally where you're likely to encounter hills, trees and other obstacles, look for skis with moderate sidecut to facilitate easier turning.

Camber
General touring skis have Nordic camber, the pronounced arch in the center that is held up off the surface of the snow, and which must be weighted for the ski to get traction. This type of camber is necessary for performing the classic kick-and-glide technique.

Flex
The flex (or "stiffness") of a ski affects how well it grips the snow when you put your weight on it and how well it rides through different types of snow. Stiff-flexed skis have a very efficient glide, which makes them perfect for groomed tracks and hard-packed trails. Most stiff-flex striding skis designed for in-track use have flexible, curved tips to help skiers stay in pre-made ski tracks.

Wax vs. "Non-Wax" Skis
You can enjoy general touring on waxable or nonwax skis. Many recreational skiers prefer nonwax models because they're easier to care for. Waxable skis, on the other hand, typically outperform non-wax models when they're prepared and cared for correctly. Waxable skis are the choice of most weekend racers and serious cross-country enthusiasts who don't mind the extra effort involved in preparation and maintenance.

Keep in mind when choosing between wax and nonwax skis that waxing skis properly can be difficult, especially in highly variable temperatures or in temperatures at or near the freezing level. In regions like the Pacific Northwest where such conditions are common, non-wax skis are usually the smarter choice for everyone but the most serious racers.

Engineered compact skis
Engineered compact skis are a relatively new style of classic striding ski that performs like traditional-length models, yet are significantly shorter and easier to handle. This decrease in length can translate into a quicker learning curve for beginners and more fun out on the trails for anyone looking to try something new. These skis tend to be wider and have more sidecut than traditional striding skis as a result of the unique construction techniques used to build them. These features make engineered compact skis perfect for occasional backcountry exploration.

Poles

For In-Track Striding
Skiing on groomed, maintained ski trails requires strong, lightweight poles that reach from the ground up to your armpits or slightly higher. Make sure they have a comfortable, adjustable strap assembly that allows for a full range of poling motion. Since in-track striding typically involves packed, groomed snow, your pole baskets (which give you purchase and keep your pole tips from digging too deeply into the snow) can be relatively small.

For Off-Track Striding
If your skiing plans include occasional touring outside of groomed ski areas, look for slightly larger pole baskets to provide better purchase in deeper, softer snows. You may also want to consider multiple-piece, telescoping poles that will allow you to shorten both poles to climb uphill comfortably, lengthen both poles for descents, or shorten one pole and lengthen the other for traversing slopes.

Bindings

There are 3 types of bindings typically used on all-around touring skis:

Nordic Norm (3-Pin)
This is a term used to refer to traditional 3-pin boot and binding connections. This traditional connection system consists of a tonguelike extension on the front of the ski boot sole (with 3 holes in its underside) and a set of 3 metal pins rising up from the binding. The sole extension fits over the pins, and a curved bale is squeezed down over the extension to hold it in place. The term "Nordic Norm" refers to the width of traditional boot sole extensions, which are 75mm wide. Boots and bindings of this basic style are often called "3-pins" or "75mm's".

New Nordic Norm (NNN)
"New Nordic Norm" is a name given to a modern boot binding connection system that competes with traditional 3-pin systems. NNN systems consist of a short, metal rod mounted in the toe of the ski boot sole, which clips into a matching ski binding somewhat like a door hinge. NNN bindings feature raised ridges on the ski's surface, which fit into matching grooves in the soles of compatible ski boots. This connection between boot and binding provides better overall ski control than 3-pin systems. NNN boot/binding systems are known for their comfortable flex, efficient ski control and solid design.

Salomon Nordic System (SNS)
SNS is Salomon's proprietary boot/binding system. It uses a boot/binding connection system similar to the NNN system, but instead of having two raised binding ridges and two matching sole groves (like NNN systems), Salomon systems feature a single, wide binding ridge and a single matching sole groove. Because of this difference in design, SNS boots/bindings and NNN boots/bindings are not compatible.

For In-Track Striding
For skiing on relatively flat terrain, especially in the groomed tracks of a maintained ski area, system bindings like NNN and SNS are perfect. They're narrow (so they fit inside narrow ski tracks), lightweight (so you don't waste energy), and they provide a comfortable connection point between your boots and skis. Because they are wider, three-pin bindings can be slightly cumbersome when used in groomed tracks. They're fine for use on trails, though, and are still popular among beginners and recreational striding skiers because of their affordability.

For Off-Track Striding
System bindings like NNN and SNS offer solid boot/ski connections and good lateral support. 3-pin systems provide a somewhat less solid connection, but they're less expensive and reliable enough for most casual off-trail trips.

Boots

Comfort is always the key to successful ski boot buying. Make sure the ski boots you buy fit comfortably and hold your feet solidly in place. Also make sure they match your bindings!

For In-Track Striding
For skiing mostly on groomed ski trails, think running shoes, not hiking boots. In-track ski boots should be comfortable, flexible and lightweight.

For Off-Track Striding
For occasional off-track touring or striding on hard-packed trails and roads, you'll need boots that can handle occasional edging, turning and stopping in more variable snow conditions. Stick with lightweight boots (remember—you still want to maximize efficient forward glide), but opt for a little more ankle support and torsional rigidity. Some boots have extra features such as lace covers and rings for attaching gaiters. These can be especially helpful for keeping snow out of the boots when you're skiing off track.

Some recreational skiers still use boots compatible with traditional 3-pin binding systems. NNN and SNS system boots provide a more comfortable pivot point, a more natural flex and more support. They also provide a more responsive connection between boot and ski, while still flexing comfortably during striding.

Nukubalavu Adventure Resort and Dive Centre

Tell me that the honeyeater, the fantail and the velvet fruit dove don't evoke some kind of romantic mystical images straight out of a Gaugin painting. They do? Okay, now slip yourself into that picture, wandering the sands of a remote beach, the slither of palm fronds as the musical backdrop for every evening. In the distance, the raucous call of the native musk parrot echoes in the forest before you see its identifying flash of scarlet and green through the leaves.

Where are you? On Kadavu, the fourth largest island in the Fijian archipelago. More specifically, you're at Nukubalavu Adventure Resort and Dive Centre on the eastern end of the island, near the center of Great Astrolabe Reef. Rest your world-weary head in a traditional bure just back from beach a beach accessible only by sea (there are no roads to this isolated resort). The scuba diving is phenomenal, an area internationally renowned as some of the planet's best, and the range includes beginning through very experienced. And if you really do just want to relax, you'll find all the help you need in the resort's name; Nukubalavu means "long white beach," and sometimes yours will be the only footprints on it!

Diving Scotland???

Yes, Scotland. This may not seem like an exotic destination, but wait until you hear about the diving.

The waters of Scapa Flow, Scotland are home to eight different wrecks. From dreadnought class battleships to light cruisers, Scapa Flow features German wrecks and many more. Once more, there are new sites opening all the time.

This expedition is best suited for more experienced divers. The tops of the wrecks are in 40-60 feet of water, with the bottoms between 90-150 feet. Mixed-gas training, including NITROX and TRIMIX, is available in Scapa Flow, complete with international certification. Qualified TRIMIX divers may dive the HMS Hampshire (resting at 209 feet), the armored cruiser that carried Lord Kitchner to his grave in June 1916.

Make Your Mask Trouble-Free

Perhaps the oldest piece of true diving equipment is the mask. Like other scuba gear, its simple purpose is to allow our bodies to function in a liquid world. The mask's contribution to this adaptation is to provide an air space in front of our eyes so they can focus. Your nose must also be available to equalize the mask's volume and your head's natural air spaces. Simple functions to be sure, but finding the right mask for you can be a complex task centered around one overriding concern: proper fit. Here's a remarkable but true statement: a poorly fitting mask is the most common and significant problem of dive gear selection.

With so many masks to choose from, the process will be far easier if you can first narrow the field by defining your own needs and preferences. Do you want a clear or an opaque mask? Two lenses or three? Prescription or nonprescription? High- or low-volume? With purge or without? After you know the types of masks you're looking for, you're ready for a trip to your dive retailer to begin trying on available models.

Once at the store, the "sniff test" is not the place to begin. Do this first: Without using the strap and without inhaling, look straight up and gently place the mask on your face. It should rest comfortably and evenly, contouring to your face with no gaps. Have someone else also look for gaps. Now place a regulator mouthpiece in your mouth. While still looking up, there should be no gaps. Again, have someone else look for them.

Without using the strap, place the mask on your face while looking forward. Gently inhale a small amount. The mask should stay in place. A strong inhalation would close minor leaks and make it an invalid test. With your regulator mouthpiece in your mouth, repeat the sniff test, gently. Still no leaks? Still comfortable? Keep going. Using the strap, adjust for best fit. Check to see how easy the straps are to adjust when the mask is in place. If you normally dive with gloves and hood, try this adjustment with these items on.

The mask must fit without touching the tip of your nose, or being uncomfortable in the area between your nose and lip. With regulator in, again check the nose. With reg still in place, try using the nose pocket to equalize with one hand. It should be easy to do with one hand and not hurt your nose. If at all possible, try your best two or three dive masks in the pool or open water.

After following these steps, you should have a mask that fits, even if your face is hard to fit. To further improve fit and comfort, consider replacing the strap with a neoprene or similar strap.

How to Apply Sunscreen

There are a variety of different swimsuits you can have in your collection from sheer micro bikinis, sheer bikinis, sheer thong bikinis (transparent when wet), thong bikinis, g-string bikinis, one piece swimsuits, mastectomy bathing suits, bikinis, tankinis and designer swimsuits. The collection of swimsuits you have will probably serve different purposes with the sheer bikinis being used for minimal tan lines and the one piece swimsuit for snorkelling fun. Whichever swimsuits you have in your closet you will be wise to own and know how to properly apply sunscreen.

The following tips are important when applying sunscreen and include:

Apply approximately thirty minutes before going out in sun so sunscreen can be absorbed by skin and less likely to wash off from perspiring

1. shake sunscreen well before applying
2. use approximately a handful of sunscreen to cover entire body
3. apply to wherever skin will be exposed to sun
4. reapply sunscreen after swimming or strenuous exercise
5. apply often throughout day if outdoors
6. wear hats and protective clothing

Equipped with the right bikinis, one piece bathing suits and sunscreen (select one with an SPF of at least fifteen) you will be able to enjoy your day in the sun safely and in style.

Are You Dive-Ready?

You're finally packed for that dream dive vacation you've been planning all miserable winter. As you slip your C-card in your wallet, you wonder, "Gee, how long has it been since I last dived? Oh well. It'll all come back to me once I'm in the water. Besides, the dive outfit down there is safe and professional." Dive operators appreciate the vote of confidence, but the best hands to be in are your own. Unlike tennis or basketball, the consequences of a long layoff from diving can be more severe than a sore elbow or a lousy jump shot.

If you haven't been in the water for a while, you have two choices: get ready to dive before you board the plane, or waste precious vacation time retraining when you get there. Here's how to be prepared for diving so you don't waste one day or dollar of your hard-earned vacation:

Got your C-card?
Don't count on a dive operator letting you slide if you forget it. Any dive op worth his accident insurance will require verification. Not taking your C-card usually means an expensive overseas call to the certification agency and a delay of one to three days before you can dive. Quick solution: Clip a second C-card (advanced or specialty) to your passport or order a replacement open-water card. When you travel, it will too.

Study at home.
Dust off your open-water scuba manual and review the chapter summaries. If you're unsure about anything, read the chapter. Check with your local dive store for home-study materials like CD-ROMs or videos.

Review your medical condition.
Especially if you have been inactive during the winter, it's time to think about improving your cardiovascular fitness. Otherwise you could arrive at the resort or live-aboard and discover you can't make all the dives you planned to do. If you suspect any medical condition could affect your diving, or there's been a change in your condition since certification, see a doctor before traveling. Divers often mistakenly assume that because a resort is first-class, the medicine will be first-world, too. Not necessarily true. Divers Alert Network (919-684-2948) or your local dive store can refer you to a diving doctor in your area.

Get wet before you go.
Especially if you haven't dived in a year, put some scuba equipment on your back and go pool diving. Most dive stores offer some sort of refresher course. Leave yourself time to have equipment repaired or serviced, especially your regulator, computer and BC. Why spend a precious vacation day getting yourself and your equipment back up to speed when you've got months to do it back home?

Practice before you pack.
At the very least, practice mounting your BC and regulator on a tank before you put them in a bag. At the resort where I work, we've seen divers try to connect a low-pressure inflator hose to the tank valve (except for the big strong guys, they're rarely successful), as well as divers who put their reg on a tank backwards, scare everyone on the boat when they crank open the air with a loud hiss, then exclaim, "Something's wrong with my regulator!" Uh, yeah, it's on backwards.

Don't wait until it rains to buy an umbrella.
You wouldn't think of leaving your house or car unprotected. Why do it to yourself in a foreign country? Check your medical insurance to determine if you would be covered in a scuba diving accident, especially medical air evacuation and chamber treatments (you probably aren't). You can buy diver's insurance for less than the price of dinner on the town.

You'll be helping yourself and other divers: One of the main reasons hyperbaric chambers go out of business is the failure of recreational divers to pay their overseas medical bills. One Caribbean operator reports that up to 50 percent of all divers welsh on their chamber payments. We all pay for that in higher insurance rates and less access to appropriate overseas medical help.

The bottom line
You should be physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to dive. It's not enough to be certified. Only you can ensure you're qualified on all counts before a dive. Don't let anyone talk you into diving--including yourself--until you're sure you are.

Yap Island Dive Operators, Accommodations and Excursions

All dive operations accept divers from any resort, although buying a hotel/dive package with one place may be wise. Yap Divers at the Manta Ray Bay will take you to the mantas in the channels or the southern wall sites. They also invite exploration, offering trips to places even they haven't been to find new sites. Manta Visions, located in the hotel, is a full-service photo and video center. Pathways, Beyond the Reef Charters and Nature's Way dive all the sites, cater to small groups and offer environmentally sensitive dive tours.

Accommodations

Choice of accommodations reflect Yap's reluctance toward progress, as there are only a handful of hotels that cater to divers, all in Colonia. The Manta Ray Bay on the harborfront is the most westernized dive resort on Yap. While there's no beach here - or any nearby for that matter - convenience is key, as the dive boats leave from the dock out front. The Pathways Hotel is a little cheaper, but is landlocked. You can get a thatched hut room with or without air-conditioning. A new kitchen is in the works to provide lunch and dinner.

Diversions

It would take some major planning and logistics, but a voyage to the outer islands is possible on the field-trip ship which takes long excursions. Pacific Missionary Aviation also has prop flights to some of these islands, as often as once or twice weekly. Walk the stone paths, but be careful during and after rain as they are extremely slippery. Another good hike is to the hills outside Colonia, near an old Coast Guard lighthouse. You get a breathtaking view of Yap proper, from north to south. Ask a guide to take you to one of the many meetinghouses, which are scattered all across the island. Check out Bechiyal in the north, a cultural complex with meetinghouse, exhibits and handicrafts.

Scuba Diving in Palau - Travel Tips

It's either the trip of a lifetime or the flight from hell, depending on how you look at it. I prefer the former, although my butt doesn't seem to agree. Eighteen hours, five snacks, four meals and three moist towelettes later, I find myself in Palau, the first in my five-stop hop across the planet's largest ocean. Let's face it, you've got no choice but to fly forever to get here - even from the West Coast you're looking at 12 hours in a chiropractically incorrect plane seat. To dive here, you've gotta get here, and to get here, you've gotta ride that bird. Want to survive the trip unscathed?

Follow these rules:

Factor in plenty of time to make connections in Los Angeles or San Francisco, as these airports can be very busy, even on weekdays.
Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes. This ain't no fashion show. Consider taking a light jacket or sweater that you can don or ditch in a hurry, depending on cabin temperatures.
Be sure to pack toiletry items in your carry-on, beacause it's more than likely you'll be overnighting on a plane, in an airport or a hotel. Take a toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, medications, etc.
Pack a book - or two.
Stay well hydrated to stave off fatigue.
Reset your internal clock. The jet-lag medication Melatonin works for many travelers to help regulate sleep. Palau is 14 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, while Guam, Yap and Chuuk are 15, Pohnpei 16 and Kosrae 17 hours ahead of EST.
If you're in the market for earplugs, go silicone.
A movie, even a bad one, can make two hours fly by; staring at the tray table in its full upright and locked position for two hours can seem like six.
Stay awake during the flight between Honolulu and Guam. That way you'll be able to fall asleep when you get to Guam for the standard overnight stay.
Ask the concierge or front-desk clerk at your hotel to reconfirm your return flight. You never know when one will be booked solid.
Show a business card. Deluxe hotels and car-rental agencies will give you a corporate or business rate on rooms and vehicles. Tell 'em you're traveling for business.

I'm not going to lie to you - it's not cheap. Airfare will set you back at least a grand, and a decent hotel about $100 a night. But out here, it's the bang you get for the buck that makes it all worth it.

STOW AWAY

What you bring and what you forget will make all the difference when you get halfway around the world. Here are some considerations when packing for Micronesia.

From the pile of clothes that you plan to take, put half of them back in your closet. Then, take half of what's left and put that back too. Now pack what's left. This is all you'll need.
Don't forget the preventive medicines: sunblock, lip balm, Imodium and pain reliever for the morning after the late night at the local sakau bar.
Pack a lot of cotton clothing, and leave the synthetic garments at home except for a windbreaker. Dress at the Palau Pacific Resort and tourist hotels on Guam tends to be slightly more formal than the rest of Micronesia. You won't feel out of place in a T-shirt and shorts in Palau's smaller hotels and at any hotel in Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae.
Although you may see women in Yap and the outer islands walking around topless, it is frowned upon for women to show their thighs in public. Anything goes, however, poolside, beachside and on the dive boat. Longer shorts are advisable for both men and women.

Back-Buoyancy BCs

Back buoyancy - like it or not - has become the most significant trend in BC design of the past decade. Even jacket-style BC designs have continued to move more of their buoyancy to the rear. It's hard to deny the advantages.

Back Buoyancy:

Tends to place you in the optimum underwater swimming position--horizontal with head slightly higher than feet;
Floats you higher out of the water when swimming in the best surface position--on your back with your feet lower than your shoulders;
Produces little or no squeeze when fully inflated, while also accommodating a greater range of size variation for a correct fit;
Clears the chest area, giving better gear accessibility, a better look for photos, less congestion and more freedom of movement;
Provides more comfort for many divers.

And sometimes even the disadvantages of back buoyancy can turn out to be pluses: Although back-buoyancy BCs can push you face-forward on the surface, and thus make changing positions on the surface more difficult than with jacket BCs, both of these difficulties can be mitigated with the use of trim weights, less air in the BC and a stronger kick of your fins when changing positions. Also, back-buoyancy BCs often lack good pockets or hose attachment points, but this problem has been largely solved by the use of jacket harnesses that have no flotation within them. This separation of the air cell from the jacket, used to fit the BC to the diver, has made possible jacket harnesses that come in several sizes, plus air cells in different lift capacities, both of which are interchangeable.

Consider the biggest advantage of weight integration--versatility. You can use these BCs with a full load of weights, with a light load, as part of a weight distribution system or with no weights at all. Plus, weight-integrated BCs are now being offered at very near the same price as non-weight-integrated BCs.

Danger in the Galapagos

The Galapagos, one of the richest marine environments in the world, are under attack from illegal fishing by Galapaguenos and industrial fishing boats. Unless we act now to slow the rate of exploitation, the Galapagos Islands marine environment could soon be decimated.

Following the collapse of coastal fisheries in Ecuador, a cash-strapped country with a burgeoning population, the Galapagos have become a seemingly limitless fountain of food and cash. Result: The hands-off mystique that once protected this 19-island archipelago - declared a World Heritage Site in 1978 - has evaporated, replaced by a frenzied, sometimes lawless exploitation reminiscent of America's Wild West. Leaders of Ecuador's populist movement, representing the poverty-stricken masses, now view the Galapagos as a resource, like oil reserves or mineral deposits, theirs to exploit as needed.

If the economic potential of the Galapagos is to be fully realized, we must convince leaders that sharks and grouper are worth more alive as tourist attractions than grilled on a plate. Only if the integrity of the marine environment is preserved can it play a long-term role in Ecuador's economic struggle.

The Galapagos remain a crucible - a place where two competing forces locked in titanic struggle, a conflict that is nothing less than a test of our species' ability to live on this planet without using it up. If we lose the Galapagos, the birthplace of the theory of evolution, if these islands become just another fished-out has-been, we must face the eventual possibility that this is also where evolution began to die.

What to Do if the Dive Boat Leaves You Behind

Summer is upon us. Most of us will be headed for the lakes and beaches for some holiday diving. I hope that everyone has planned their trip well and purchased dive insurance. You never know what will happen. My best advise to you is to obey water safety rules, dive safely, and choose a dive boat wisely. What do you do if your dive boat leaves you behind?

1. Don't Panic: Look again. Maybe you missed seeing the boat. Get your head out of the water as high as you can and do a complete 360 degree search of the horizon. If the boat is close enough to swim to, take a compass heading and swim to it.

2. Signal for Help: If you are not close enough to the boat or a current prevents you from swimming to it, you should signal for help. Visual and audio signals are available for scuba divers. If you don't have the luxury of having any with you, take off one of your fins and wave it around, splashing the water. If you can, yell for help.

3. Get Your Orientation: Try to determine which direction you have been swimming/drifting relative to the shoreline or boat. Most likely, you have been going down-current. Watch the plant life to see which direction it is leaning. If you have drifted down-current, the boat is probably in the other direction.

4.Wait: It is best for you to stay where you are. If you are close to land, get out of the water. You will need to conserve your body heat and energy. Ditch any unnecessary equipment you have.

5. Be a Survivor: Keep a look out for boats and planes that might see you. Stay close to your buddy. Keep your arms and legs close to your body fir heat and don't give up hope!

I hope that no unfortunate accidents happen to anyone this weekend. Stay alert. Be safe.

As a diver, you have a profound effect on marine life. Most divers would not deliberately destroy creatures of the underwater world. However, if you do not know or understand the delicate nature of certain fish or other life, you could do more harm than good. Let's discuss some things you can do to help protect marine life while on a dive.

Coral Reefs

Hawaii is a world apart, not quite another country but far more than just another American state. The little town of Volcano, 4,000 feet above sea level on the Big Island, between Kilauea and Mauna Loa, is one of the Hawaiian islands' hidden treasures, a place of cool air, dense green forests, and night skies lit up by the glow from Kilauea's lava flows.

It's also the birthplace of poet Garrett Hongo, whose return to his origins is the springboard for Volcano, a work of lyrical prose by a master of language, and a wonderful introduction to the subtlety and complexity of life in Hawaii.

Each is movingly portrayed within the author's own family.

Hydrogen, due to its abundance in the universe, is touted as an ecofriendly alternative to fossil fuels to battle the energy crisis and global warming. Fueling cars with fuel cells is not a new idea, but their practical use has been marred by a few drawbacks, such as the high cost of the cells and the risk involved in storing hydrogen. The auto industry is trying to tame the drawbacks by designing concept cars that have the potential to keep the world moving at a pace we are accustomed to. Here is a list of 20 such concept cars that will be powered by hydrogen; and the only thing coming out of the exhaust pipes would be clean water:

• BMW HR2 hybrid car:

The BMW HR2 hybrid car is a prototype race car only and we will miss it in the showrooms. BMW is also developing fuel cell cars, using the technology of the hybrid cars. BMW promises to launch a dual-mode version of the current 7 Series during the production cycle of the present model, thus introducing the first car of its kind able to run on both hydrogen and gasoline.

• Ronn Motors Scorpion Roadster:

Developed by Ronn Motors, the Scorpion Roadster is powered by the hydrogen/gasoline engine that not only ensures low emissions, but also promises the thrill for which supercars are known for. The Scorpion comes with a classy body featuring low-slung front-end, swept-back headlamps, hood vents and bulbous fenders, together with huge air-intakes aft in the front doors.

• H2 Racer:

This zero-emission car has been designed to bid for the title of world’s fastest hydrogen-powered racer in 2009. Apart from aiming for the record, the car has been designed to demonstrate the power of clean fuels like hydrogen to the world. The car is powered by an internal combustion motorcycle engine that has been modified to run on hydrogen. With an ecofriendly engine in place, the car is expected to reach speeds in excess of 170km/h.

• Ozone:

This hydrogen-powered fuel-cell transportation vehicle seems to come from Toyland. The whole structure is encased between two giant wheels that are controlled by two separate electric motor powered by fuel cells. Quirky and wacky are the two words that kind of fit this car aptly.

• City Concept Car:

Designed by Matt Bradbury, the City Concept runs on hydrogen fuel cells and can be parked tails up. While vertical parking is not something a normal car owner would like, taking the lightweight body and the protruding wheels of the City Concept into consideration, it doesn’t look to be a weird thought.

• Aston Martin DBGT 2025:

Designed by Brendan Woolsey, a student of Industrial Design at the University of Western Sydney, the Concept Car of 2025 would be powered by a tank full of water that is split into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is used as fuel for the car, leading to zero emissions. If anything, the classic exhaust fitted on this future car will only give out water vapor and some heat. Going from 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds, the car has two really strong assets.

• Renault Vitesse:

Designed by James Logan, the “Renault Vitesse” is small, safe and ecofriendly at the same time. While the Vitesse would be made using extremely lightweight hybrid plastic, it would derive energy from clean hydrogen fuel cells. It would also be fitted with unique bike mountings at the rear end to eliminate any need of roof racks, which not only look weird but also spoil the aerodynamics of a car.

• Volkswagen Splinter:

Here is concept car that seems inspired by the Smart Fortwo, but instead of a conventional gasoline engine, this car is to be powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell counterpart. The two-seater car has been designed specifically for the Volkswagen brand with the radiator grille and boot lid sporting the brand’s logo. The car should be perfectly suited for congested city lanes, where parking is a major problem.

• Hyundai 2020:

Designed by Nicolas Stone, the Hyundai 2020 is inspired by plants. The car generates fuel for itself using nothing more than sunlight and water, the two fuels for plants to carry out their natural processes. The transparent solar cells that the car is equipped with generate electricity from ambient light and use it to carry out electrolysis of water, finally generating hydrogen, which fuels the car.

• Jaguar C-XC:

Designed by Philip Dean, the Jaguar C-XC comes with a hydrogen fuel cell drive train mounted under the single-piece glass surface, which covers the entire length of the car, adding to its aerodynamic aesthetics. The wheels of the car are also covered to further increase its aerodynamic properties. Apart from being powered by a zero-emission engine, the materials used for constructing the body of the car will have minimal environmental impact. The car is designed to be built from vegetable tan leather and recycled PET bottles.

• RT20:

Designed by Mathieu Lewis, the Rt20 is to be powered by liquid hydrogen. The hydrogen fuels a twin-turbo V6 engine promising a power-driven ride. The car is no less in safety and comfort features. The conventional spring-based suspension is replaced by electromagnets for better response. The response can be adjusted even more by regulating the current passing through the magnets.

• Honda FC Sport:

The FC sport is based on the V-Flow stack of the FCX Clarity concept car. The car incorporates a high-power fuel cell stack, located between the rear seats, and a backup battery pack placed in the middle of the car.

• The Baja 1000 Buggy:

Designed by Dong Tran, a Vietnamese-American design student in Detroit, the Baja 1000 Buggy has been designed for a green race on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. The car comes with a primary hydrogen fuel cell power source, which gets complemented by a battery charged by solar cells that are infused in the body of the car. The solar cells provide continuous energy, while the racer concentrates on the track. The use of hydrogen fuel cells mean that the only thing coming out of the exhaust would be clean water that would be recycled to help hydrate the driver during the grueling race.

• Mazda TONBO:

Designed by DedekDesign and Mazda of Europe, the car is to be powered by hydrogen fuel cells to ensure that all that comes out of the exhaust is pure water. Just like the Rinspeed Scuba, this car too is designed to drive in water. Another innovative feature to be incorporated in this car is the use of an anti-vandal parking system that takes care of some parking woes.

• General Motors’ HydroGen4:

The HydroGen4 uses 440 single hydrogen cells that combine hydrogen from its carbon fiber storage tanks and oxygen from the atmosphere to produce electricity, which then propels the car to a top speed of 100 mph. The car is able to go from a standstill to 62 mph in just 12 seconds.

• Volkswagen CitiZen:

The car runs on a hybrid propulsion system that carries batteries and hydrogen fuel cells as well. The wheels of this car rotate 180 degrees, so the user of this car won’t have to do much to take a U-turn. The car can be maneuvered by a joystick that can easily be used from either of the front seats.

• Honda PUYO:

An environmentally responsible car, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the Honda PUYO is meant to convey an adorable pet-like feeling; warm and friendly, forming an intimating bond between the people and the car. Amphibious 1000 by Giancarlo Zema Design Group, Semi-Submerged Luxury Hotel

Eco Factor: World’s first semi-submerged hotel resort is a stunning eco-destination.

If extravagance is your motto, then you’re gonna love the “Amphibious 1000.” Designed by the Giancarlo Zema Design Group for an Arabian commission, this luxurious retreat is the first semi-submerged hotel resort in the world. Providing an opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds – land and sea — the resort resembles a big aquatic animal stretching out from the land into the sea, extending horizontally for 1km. The land area houses residential buildings, office buildings and a marina with a modern and flexible harbor. All the structures are situated in a semi-circle around the tower with the panoramic restaurant.

Four semi-submerged hotels, each offering 75 luxury suites, will be located in the sea section of the resort. Reminding us of the soft lines of the superyachts anchored on land, the hotels include water exhibition galleries, an interactive museum on marine life and an aquarium with a glass tunnel leading to an underwater observatory located in the center of this marine park. The hotels have large diagonal glass windows that offer a fascinating view of marine life. Connected to the welcome area by the long arms are fitness areas, gardens and a special outdoor theater with a moving stage that opens out on the sea.

In addition, there will be 80 floating suites called “Jelly-fish“ with underwater views available at the smaller floating platforms, each ending with a lighthouse. The electrical vehicles will take the guests through the marine park without causing harm to the park’s eco-system. The teak floor complements the main steel structure perfectly, creating a stunning eco-destination. The bridge connecting the land and sea section is draped in plants, giving the impression of projecting the land flora into the sea. Water transport is also provided by 20-meter aluminum yachts called Trilobis that are equipped with hydrogen engines and an underwater observatory globe. Considering the comfort, luxurious and green environment the Amphibious 1000 offers, it is definitely the ultimate eco-destination for the well-heeled.

Caboodle Ranch Cat Shelter for Homeless Cats

Craig Grant bought a tree farm far away from the city and turned it into a sanctuary for all the cats he has rescued.
He lives there with the cats and provides lots of love, care and companionship. It’s hard to imagine that once he was not a cat lover and did not want cats until he met his son’s cat Pepper. He also got to experience what it is like raising a litter of kittens.
“Over that time I learned that every cat had its own unique personality and it wasn’t long before the kittens were swinging from my curtains. I didn’t care. Something had changed… I didn’t want to give them up.”
The condo life was not easy for the kitties, so Craig found a tree farm and settled down there for his fur babies.

Over the next several months, he rescued more and more homeless and abandoned cats. The number of new residents kept going up, so Craig expanded the sanctuary to make more room for the animals.

The farm was named Caboodle Ranch and is now a permanent home for all the homeless, rescued cats. Each of them has a sad story of their past, but now they are living in heaven.
“Cats should be able to roam free, and at Caboodle Ranch, that’s what they do.”
Craig has built many beautiful cat houses and decorated the place with vibrant colors and tons of liveliness.
